Weight Loss And Weight Gain

Many people wonder why is it that some people can easily put on weight while others do not. Also, some people are able to change their lifestyle quite easily and lose weight, while others find it difficult to even shed one pound. The answer lies in the metabolism of the body. If a person has a high metabolism, he is able to burn calories faster than the calorie intake. Hence, that person will lose weight faster.

The second reason for weight gain or weight loss actually lies in our behavior. If we have bad eating habits, we will not lose weight until we change those habits. The third reason for weight loss or weight gain is psychological. My nutritionists and dietitians consider this to a very strong determining factor. Many people have misconceptions or beliefs about who will be able to lose weight and who will not. Therefore, until these misconceptions are cleared, a person will not be able to lose weight.

Some psychologists believe that it is quite natural to connect psychological issues with food and weight as food is often linked to a person's childhood memories and his relationship with his mother. They believe that if a mother showed love to a child by giving the child food, that child when he grows up will have trouble dieting as restricting intake of food will be associated with the feeling of being unloved. On the other hand, if a mother controlled the child's food and the child starts rebelling against the mother's rule, then the same child as an adult would end up eating too much as he would be still rebelling unconsciously.

However, the psychological implications of weight gain or weight loss cannot be expressed in such simple terms. When it comes to weight loss, many people are actually happy thinking about losing weight. However, when it starts happening in reality, they get scared and may end up disrupting their weight loss program. This could be because they are afraid to let the world see their real self.

It must be stressed that many of the fears or desires that a person has about losing or gaining weight actually take place at a subconscious level. What the person feels on a conscious level will be quite different. Therefore, if the person can sort out the psychological issues connected with weight gain or weight loss, he will be a lot more successful in achieving his aim.
